You have probably read about it - hear about it on the news - or hear others talk about it: Identity Theft.

It's big news due to of the number of people that have already been affected by this type of crime and the projected number of people who will be affected in the future.

A thief can also commandeer your computer by downloading programs that will in turn, send them your stored data such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, birth dates, etc. This is information you may have used in other innocent Internet transactions, that is stored as "cookies" to save time for you later, with other transactions at the same online store.

Other typical Identity Theft schemes: diversion of your mail to another address - of the thief's choosing. Thieves go through your trash, or the trash of unknowing businesses for customer's personal data. Thieves may obtain your credit report by posing as someone who may have a legal right to the information such as a landlord, or other creditor. They may buy personal information that appears on your credit applications from crooked store employees.

It takes a victim up to eighteen months and a great deal of time and money to clean up the damage that the thief has made of their credit record.
